Dale Earnhardt and four others to be The inaugural class for the NASCAR Hall of Fame

Dale Earnhardt, a seven-time NASCAR champion and winner of 76 races, was named to the inaugural class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

Ceremonies for Earnhardt and four others -- Richard Petty, Junior Johnson and the father-son duo of Bill France Sr. and Bill France Jr. -- will be held next May in Charlotte, N.C.

Earnhardt Sr., whose aggressive style rattled competitors and captivated fans, was killed in a crash on the last lap of the 2001 Daytona 500.

Petty holds the record for most NASCAR wins (200); Johnson has 50 wins as a driver and six championships as a car owner; Bill France Sr. helped establish NASCAR, and his son, Bill Jr., succeeded him as NASCAR president in 1972. Both are deceased.
